The word about can be used as a preposition, adverb and adjective.
Here's a few examples.
-preposition
connected or associated with: There was an air of mystery about her.
-adverb
nearby; not far off: She is somewhere about.
-adjective
moving around; astir: She was up and about while the rest of us still slept.
